Course Analysis System (CAS)

Terminology

The data for CAS can be comprised of two types of components which are further defined below:

Dimensions – the qualitative attribute of analysis. For example, gender, campus, school, major, etc.

Fact or Measures – the quantitative attribute of analysis. For example, test scores, headcount, credits, GPA, etc.

Dimensions

Reporting Period – The new system has data collected for each fall semester back to 1998.

Academic Unit – The undergraduate or graduate school within the University where the faculty salaries are funded.

Academic Department – The undergraduate department within an undergraduate unit where the faculty salaries are funded.

Offering Unit – The undergraduate or graduate school within the University offering the course.

Level of Teaching –The course level as determined by the course number. For example, an undergraduate level has a course number less than 500. Graduate courses are numbered 500 or greater. The undergraduate level is further divided into lower division (less than 300) and upper division (300 to 499).

Rank of Instructor  - Academic title of instructor.

Source of Faculty – Source of funding of faculty members salaries and whether it is the same as the school offering the course (Home) or another instructional unit(IDR) or non-instructional unit (Non-IDR).

Facts or Measures

Student Credit Hours (SCH) - Number of students in each multiplied by their credits attempted.

Student Full-Time Equivalent (FTEs) – Calculated from SCHs by dividing the SCHs by the FTE constant for each offering unit (16 for undergraduate schools and 12 for graduate schools).

Actual Faculty Lines Budgeted – Budget status report faculty lines plus calculated Part Time Lecturers(PTL), which are the course credits divided by 12. PTLs are estimated because they are not included on the budget status report.

Student Faculty Ratio (SFR) - Student FTEs divided by Actual Faculty Lines.

Faculty Lines Earned - Lines are earned by actual teaching activities. It is calculated by taking Student FTEs divided by student faculty ratio constant for each offering unit(20 for undergraduate schools and 12 for graduate schools) and increased by an instructional allowance, currently at 20 percent).

Faculty Line Ratio - A measure of instructor efficiency. The ratio of Faculty Lines Earned to Actual Faculty Lines. A value greater than one indicates that an instructor is teaching a load greater than what is budgeted for the department.
